During an STS mission, the requirements dictated that the Orbiter would have
to "fly" in a particularly vulnerable orientation: payload bay doors open
and facing forward (in the +x RAM direction). The HITF was asked by the Shuttle Mission Team to
analyze the threat posed by possible meteoroid and orbital
debris impacts on this particular mission. The Shuttle Team provided the
HITF with information about the orbit for this mission (altitude,
inclination, etc.), as well as the Orbiter attitude over the entire
mission timeline.
